3rd October

The Winchester Conservative Association Autumn Drinks Party will be held on Friday 3rd October 2008, 6.30 - 8.30pm, at Littleton House, by kind permission of Sir James and Lady Butler.
It will be just post the Party Conference and our PPC, Steve Brine, will give us a brief update on the Conference.

20th November

The Winchester Conservative Association's Annual Dinner will be held on Thursday 20th November 2008. We are extremely lucky to have Lord Strathclyde as our Speaker.
    Lord Strathclyde is Leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Lords, a post he has held since 1998. He was made a Privy Councillor in 1995 and has been a Member of the Shadow Cabinet since 1997. He was elected 2nd in the list of 75 hereditary Peers of all parties chosen to remain in the House of Lords after the 1999 House of Lords Act.
    Throughout his Parliamentary career, he has championed the cause of Parliamentary independence and is an expert on Constitutional reform. He was Channel 4 Peer of the Year in 2000 and The Spectator Magazine Peer of the Year in in 2004.
    He entered the House of Lords in 1986, became a Whip in 1998, was promoted to Minister for Tourism in 1989 and then to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries at the Scottish Office 1990-2. After the 1992 Election, he moved to the Department of the Environment  before becoming the Minister for Small Firms and Consumer Affairs at the Department of Trade and Industry. In 1994, John Major appointed him Government Chief Whip at the House of Lords. He continued as Chief Whip in Opposition during 1997-8.
